A “Sweet and Tasty” Birthday

What does a birthday mean? For some it’s just another day but for me it’s different. For me, it’s one of the best days and no not only because you get to celebrate how awesome you are and that you were born but rather it’s because you lived. It means everything you have been through, everything you did and didn’t do, everything you loved (and yes, let’s say it) hated has brought you to this very point in your life…your birthday.

A birthday, the best day on earth no matter how old you are about to turn YOU MUST CELEBRATE IT! So this year I had planned to celebrate by traveling back home for both my birthday as well as my mom’s. I wanted to celebrate with family, friends and YES, a vegan cake.

Remember my family isn’t vegan so every chance I get to share my vegan treats with them I do it. So I planned a small BBQ (veggies for me, thank you dad) and I thought OK, the “cakes” need to be the main focus. I ordered my mom her favorite cake (job done) taken care of, check! Then it was my turn…what cake will I have? After some pondering I called this lovely cake shop called Sweet and Tasty in McAllen, Texas and asked…do you make vegan cakes? In my brain I was thinking OK I have a 50/50 chance for them to make my day and tell me yes. So I waited for what seemed (in my brain) to be a century for their response and yes, they said YES! Let me tell you, them telling me yes alone could have been my birthday present.

So this is the key situation in the story and this is how I know everyone at Sweet and Tasty are ROCK STARS! On the phone and through email I said “this is what I am all about” ethical fashion, golf, veganism this is my brand. I also said you have the freedom to be creative. I want to be surprised and I want you to do what you do.

So I left my cake destiny in their hands. For me this was both easy and hard to do. I at times am free spirited and let the universe take care of things on its own time and other times…well, there’s a dire need for me to know exactly what is happening (it’s a balance) so I was fighting this. Yes, you may be thinking it’s just a cake but it was still in the back of my mind…

Hmm I wonder how my cake is looking?

It’s Party day! At this point everyone was starting to arrive, house is ready, food is ready and cake is about to arrive. My mom got off the car and I see her with the white box. Mind you my dad had already surprised her that day with flowers at work and picked up her cake so mine was the only one left. That white little box was tearing at my need to know and I wanted to drop everything I was doing to run and open it (who are we kidding)…I did just that. “You will love it, I started to cry when I saw it,” my mom tells my as I’m trying to rip the tape on the sides off and love it I did.

fullsizerender89

As I opened the box I did feel a sense of love. The way Sweet and Tasty was able to portray my life through a cake, it was art, it was a piece of me and it was beautifully done. For me that was the “Sweet” part.

fullsizerender94

fullsizerender93

Now for the “Tasty” part. I had been starring at my cake the entire evening and everyone was commenting how great it looked. After the singing and picture taking it was the moment of truth. I took my knife, sliced right into it and ate the first piece…SOLD! I was thinking wow, how is this vegan? Are you sure you’re not tricking me? How can this cake taste so great? It was magic! I had to refrain myself from eating the entire thing…so I shared. Everyone had both cakes the vegan and non-vegan one. Let me tell you they were shocked, they could not tell the difference in taste and that ladies and gentleman is what makes my heart happy. To share with the world (in this case my family) that a “vegan” cake has the ability to taste just as good as a cake made with dairy and eggs, now that’s pure happiness for me. Even my brother…aside from my dad (who now is more open to vegan items) loved it. Of course after a few vegan jokes (just as an awesome big brother should do) said I tried the cake…and it was good. Yes! I did an imaginary fist pump in my mind.

fullsizerender90

img_1632

img_1633

So, Sweet and Tasty really made my birthday special and the fact as a company they created a vegan cake that depicted my life with just inspiration to go off of says a lot about them. The reason why I said I felt love when I opened the box is I knew that there was no harm done to any being in order to make this cake. I was consuming positive energy and thoughts and for me that’s what made this cake amazing. Sweet and Tasty you are the icing on my cake, literally! You created a stunning piece of work and my heart and taste buds will remember that always.

The Tee Project

Imagine yourself on the tee box, how many tees do you see forgotten, left behind or sadly broken? Better yet, what happens to these tees? Do they drift away to tee heaven, where all the broken tees (along with your lost golf balls) rest in peace? Let’s face it a lot of us don’t really give it a second thought, right? So the golf tee becomes an after thought. You think to yourself, hey I have a million more in my bag what’s one lost tee going to do to me? In reality though, the golf tee is a vital part of our game. I mean who plays without a tee in a round of golf? OK, OK some people may but no one I would play with or have played with for that matter. So let’s start looking at the golf tee as a “first pick.” Think of your fantasy football teams…if I participated in fantasy football (let’s get real I have no clue how to) but if I did, you better believe tees would be my first pick.

fullsizerender75

I have broken my fair share of tees in my life and I am sure if you are an avid golfer you have done the same. I am also sure (now thinking about it) if you combined every tee I’ve used (and killed) throughout my lifetime you can
probably create a small forest with them. Do I feel horrible about that? You are DARN RIGHT I do! Those of you who know me understand that I am very passionate about sustainable and recycled products. So my search for an impeccable tee continued…until the golf gods gathered together and decided to create this seamless tee. It is true, I have found the love of my life and the best part is it’s green, never breaks in tough situations and I only need one yes, I found the perfect…tee. The search is over ladies and gentlemen swipe right and please meet the Tee Project.

The Tee Project

fullsizerender74

img_1258

With the Tee Project, tees are made from recycled materials and their performance speaks wonders. I personally tried them on the range and hit the same tee 18 times. I thought, amazing I can play a round with just one tee. After that I figured I would spice things up and ask 3 gentlemen to hit the same tee with their drivers guy 1, guy 2, guy 3…(looks at tee) YES, still in perfect condition. Not only are these “magical” tees sustainable but also as a company they support a different cause each year to give back to the community…talk about the real deal.

A tee fresh out of the bag

fullsizerender88

Tee hit 18 times

fullsizerender78

After Guy 1

fullsizerender79

After Guy 2

fullsizerender80

And after Guy 3

fullsizerender82

Why this should matter? Well, there are many “issues” out there when it comes to the idea “is golf sustainable?” I was fortunate enough to speak with Alex Kummer (The Man himself) creator of the Tee Project and get his insight on how and why the brand was born.

Here is what he had to say…

“I came up with the idea for Tee Project out of my passions for golf and social entrepreneurship. Creating a brand that centers around giving back was an important piece of criteria for me. We combine that mission with a quality product to serve as an important vessel to carry our brand while exceeding our golfers’ expectations. Our golfers love our tee. It’s made from recycled materials and lasts considerably longer than traditional wood tees. From a product standpoint, we hope to provide our golfers with a unique and sustainable option on the course.” – Alex Kummer

fullsizerender77

So, this is my invitation to take a moment and ponder on how you can live a sustainable life and what that looks like for you. If you golf, small acts can make a difference and these tees are far from a “small” act. In the big scheme of things these little recycled tees make a world of difference. For me, it’s not “just” a tee but an act and movement towards a better future and who doesn’t love that?

DIY Vegan Bowl

Vegan Bowl to your rescue! This is simple yet appetizing and well…let these pictures do the talking.

Ingredients:

Wild Rice

Beans

Potato

Mixed Veggies

Hummus

Nuts

Note: You can use any combo of these ingredients, sub or omit to your liking. Make it your own hence the “standard” list. I want this to be your own masterpiece (but I won’t hate it if you create the same exact dish, in fact I want to see it.)

So it begins with the rice…

I used Wild Rice with added quinoa (cooked of course.)

FullSizeRender(58)

FullSizeRender(60)

The Veggies…

I sautéed mixed veggies using coconut aminos and olive oil.

FullSizeRender(61)

FullSizeRender(62)

The Potato!

You can cook these various ways but I baked them for about 20 minutes with added olive oil, sea salt, pepper and garlic. I have also made this with sweet potato as well, both equally amazing.

FullSizeRender(63)

FullSizeRender(65)

Those Black Beans though…

I used black beans here but you can use a variety of beans (probably the easiest step.)

FullSizeRender(67)

FullSizeRender(69)

And Voilà!

Your very own Vegan Bowl.

FullSizeRender(72)

FullSizeRender(73)

So once you have all your ingredients ready you can keep them separate until you are ready to go. When it’s time to chow down mix all the ingredients in a bowl, top them with mixed nuts, hummus and ladies and gentleman you are pretty set to go conquer life and ready to EAT (wait, this is actually the easiest step.)

Please enjoy for the both of us.

Live Balance. Live Great.

“Beyond” Amazing

I find myself either on a mission or pondering through new vegan items when I’m at the grocery store. I look for items that will keep me on point while I’m on the golf course or being “awesome at life” and this time I found Beyond Meat. So, naturally I was now on “my mission” to try a package (or several.) You see who wants to try just one chicken strip package? One chicken strip package needs company, right? RIGHT, so I ended up with these bad gals. It was all for research, all for you, I promise. So please meet Beyond Meat…Chicken Strips, Swedish Meatballs and Beast Burger.

This is the Group.

FullSizeRender(46)

FullSizeRender(47)

Enjoy the Meat-free beauty…

Beyond Chicken

Lightly Seasoned Strips

FullSizeRender(49)

FullSizeRender(50)

FullSizeRender(51)

For the chicken strips I did a stir-fry. I sautéed the strips first then added mixed veggies, nuts and flax seeds. They have a tender texture which makes them feel and taste like chicken. You can sub these strips potentially anywhere you use grilled chicken. Keep them as is or add your favorite seasoning or sauces.

Beyond Beef

Swedish Meatballs

FullSizeRender(41)

FullSizeRender(42)

FullSizeRender(43)

FullSizeRender(45)

Matching Swedish Meatballs with not only salty sauces but also sweet condiments can really switch up your dish. For these meatballs I browned them a bit and topped them with maple syrup. They were absolutely my favorite! You can eat them with maple syrup, jam and chutney or make them salty and toss them in spaghetti or a sub sandwich. These will change your life (I am serious though, I’m really not kidding…drop everything and go find them.)

Beyond Meat

Beast Burger, Beyond Nutrition Blend

FullSizeRender(55)

FullSizeRender(52)

FullSizeRender(53)

FullSizeRender(54)

I made these for my parents (yes, they eat meat) and they loved them. My dad especially (maybe because the name “Beast Burger” made it tough and manly) whatever it may have been he was definitely a fan. The patties have a meatier taste compared to a veggie or bean patty taste. The texture is also tender and you can grill them outside which is amazing because you can BBQ and be vegan/vegetarian y’all! Match them with burger buns, your favorite bread or salad and you will be ready to relax and enjoy your Summer days.

Beyond Meat as a whole is absolutely satisfying. You can find them at your local supermarket and they can be eaten in various ways. If you are a “Veg” person you will enjoy these and they will be a great addition to your meat-free life. For those who eat meat…keep an open mind and try them. You never know, you could fall in love (you know, like a romantic fairly tale) “Beyond” belief that you magically fell in love so fast…see what I did there.

Enjoy!

When You’re an…Ethical, Vegan, Golfer Fashionista

IMG_7968

Who are you!? If I pay attention to Snickers and “I am not me when I’m hungry” then Snickers is really making people (including me) question who we really are.

Well for some of you that don’t know (even though I am always hungry I still “know” ME) I’m an Ethical, Vegan, Golfer Fashionista and Animal and Women’s Welfare Advocate. What this means is eco/sustainable fashion rocks! I am vegan and yes, I do it for the animals. I play (and coach) golf and I am a HUGE animal lover and feminist (everyone has their own definition of what they consider feminism is) so BOOM! My definition of being ALL THERE AUGUST (All Balanced, All Great in all areas of my life.)

-Ethical/Sustainable Fashion Consulting

-Wardrobe Consultant for Athletes/Golfers in ready-to-wear and sportswear

-Vegan food education

-Travel to golf courses to showcase their food, course and fashion

-Visit/work with charities dealing with animal and women’s welfare

These are a few of my favorite things (as I sing this in the tune of Julie Andrews, thanks Jules!)

Why I love these “things” you might ask…to be honest they make my soul dance, they make my soul move and yet they settle it all at the same time.

So in celebration of today (because why not celebrate today and after all its someone’s birthday somewhere.) Let us talk sustainable fashion and a spice of golf.

IMG_7974(1)

This is her, my Goodwill find!

I found this amazing purse at a local Goodwill and this jacket comes from a second-hand boutique. Using my sustainable fashion tip, mixing second-hand finds (old) with store-bought (new) has the potential to come together quite nicely. Of course you have to dig (and wash) these finds but taking a moment for yourself to explore a second-hand store is actually very relaxing and the best part is you give this fashion item another life. It had a story before you (and I often find myself wondering who had this before me and what their story was) but now you have it and it’s yours to make your own story with.

IMG_7973

“The Jacket” that’s been with me for a long time now and I still love her.

IMG_7969

P.S. I use TaylorMade Irons because that’s where my heart is.

IMG_7964

The Look

So this is my ALL THERE AUGUST moment, this is what makes my life balanced and great. There is no one way to be ALL THERE AUGUST (or ATA) it’s what moves you what makes your soul dance and feel at home. So what is your ALL THERE AUGUST life or moment? What makes you balanced and great in your life? Whatever it may be share it with me and the world, celebrate your awesomeness, celebrate your gifts.

Live Balanced. Live Great.

A 24 Hour Houston Vibe

FullSizeRender(24)Tell me what is better than a weekend with your girlfriends (or boyfriends, y’all can bromance too) eating great vegan food, fashion and The JJ Watt Charity Softball Game? Well…if you can think of something please let me know because secrets don’t make friends (unless they are secrets with your friends that is.)

But First…

A Sustainable Fashion Tip: Mix new pieces of clothing with old ones. One piece can come from a thrift/second hand store while the other can be a new staple. When buying clothes ask yourself the following golden questions:

Will you wear this a lot ?

What can you mix-and-match this piece with ?

And finally, the most important…do you really love this ? This is the critical question because I feel you should love every piece of clothing in your closet (for different reasons of course) but truly LOVE them. I do know though it is possible to fall out of love with your clothing and when that sad moment comes (just like a romantic novel of course) sell them to make extra cash, donate them or swap them with some friends.

So please meet my street style brunch outfit…and Brunch!

Speaking of simple, I will tell you something that was simple and DELICIOUS… The Vegan Pizza from MKT Bar. I usually have to substitute or omit cheese but this…this was simple, definitely a YUM and DONE pizza. So even if you have 24 hours to visit a city DO IT! Eat, dance, support a charity event and dress like a boss but most of all enjoy your moment and experience the city.

When You Have a BAR Problem

FullSizeRender

Yes it’s true I have a Bar problem (no, not that kind of a bar) it’s the ones you eat! I work hard meal prepping and eating consciously but when I’m on the go bars are on the top of my food list. With being Vegan, looking at labels is second hand nature now and after trying numerous bars I have come to find some of my favorite ones. So of course I want to share the love my taste buds get to experience with you and we will begin with Lara Bars. I have loved Lara Bars the longest so we can call these my “First Loves”. There’s just something about these bars and their flavors that I am really crushing on and the fact that they are Vegan, Gluten Free, Non – GMO and Kosher make these the perfect combination of perfection. The Alt Protein is amazing because it gives you that extra protein boost you need after a workout. Blueberry Muffin, I promise tastes like a literal Blueberry Muffin and will not fail you. Throw in Peanut Butter and Jelly, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and then Peanut Butter Cookie (can I please marry all of you now?) These Bars are quite moist and soft to chew. So, if you enjoy a bar that’s easier on the bite I would recommend that these are the ones for you.

FullSizeRender(11)

Nugo Bars are my “New Love” I recently discovered them at Whole Foods and the Chocolate Pretzel with Sea Salt… I can literally eat every day of my life if you asked me to (gluten free and vegan, I mean what more can you ask for in a bar right?) Nugo bars are larger and quite filling they contain 10g of Protein so you are basically set for life with these. They also have a crunchy inside so if you enjoy more of a texture while you eat these are perfect.

FullSizeRender(10)

Probar Bite in Mixed Berry, we will call them my “Faithful Love” these bars are very subtle in taste, the perfect size and lets say it ORGANIC! Can I also mention they give you a kick of energy and of course Vegan. Yes these bars are the Golden Star Kids. Now for taste think of soft, moist granola with fruit flawlessly put together in a bar.

FullSizeRender(9)

Then finally here comes Nature’s Bakery Fig Bar, they are called my “Sweetest Love” in Blueberry and Raspberry for me this is the perfect amount of sweet all packed up in two little bars (I can literally eat 20,000 of them if you let me so please refrain me from doing so.) When you crave something sweet or want to indulge a bit put these in your life and you will not regret it. They come in natural fig bar form (just better!)

FullSizeRender(12)

Eat these bars alone or pair them with fruit or a smoothie and you are ready for the world. Depending on your own calorie intake and personal goals and needs each bar offers you a wide variety of benefits. Let me know what you think because for me they are heaven and can be your heaven on earth too.

Fashionably Ethical

FullSizeRender(8)

Pondering on what our first subject should be it was only natural for us to zone in on the importance of ethical fashion. Speaking with individuals unfamiliar with ethical, eco, green, sustainable and fair-trade fashion the following questions came up in conversation:

  1. What does Ethical Fashion mean?
  1. Why Ethical Fashion?
  1. What made me decide Ethical Fashion?
  1. How can people look for clothing or products that are considered ethical?

Lets start with what does Ethical Fashion mean, Question #1?

Now people’s morals differ from one another so in reality “ethical” can have different meanings to different people. For me as a designer and entrepreneur Ethical Fashion means creating a brand, designing, sourcing and partnering with individuals and companies that genuinely care about the well-being of consumers, employees, animals, giving back and the current and future impact on our environment. An ethical brand though can decide to focus on one, a few or all of these issues. For example, a company can use organic cotton yet may manufacturer abroad in factories that are environmentally unsafe. This example should not stop you from buying products made from organic material (because you should) but it gives you an explanation on how companies may use a sustainable angle in their brand. One is not greater than the other because it all goes back to what is important to the brand. On the other hand, brands using organic material in their products also do work with fair-trade manufacturers. This depends on what the founder is passionate for and what the brand represents. So to bring it all together, an ethical fashion brand strives to make positive changes, changes that make a difference in a life and the ecosystem.

Question #2 and #3

Why Ethical Fashion? To be purely honest, I chose to create an Ethical Athletic Wear Brand and Blog because I was passionate about it. Studying and working in the industry made me realize I wanted to be the change. I wanted to look at all these issue (the well-being of consumers, employees, animals, giving back and the current and future impact on our environment) and address them all. As I traveled and my knowledge grew I started to become more and more passionate about creating this brand that “gave out” positive to the world. That it gave more instead of taking from someone, that it spread positive energy to everyone the brand came across, that became and currently is my goal. My two passions, women’s and animal welfare, dear and important to my heart also was a pushing point for me to become this brand. How can I preach to be balanced and great in all areas of life if I don’t believe myself? So that’s what I did, the brand All There August is a resemblance of everything I care about all in one.

Finally #4, how can people look for clothing or products that are considered ethical?

Many brands are starting to address this “issue” in their designing. I say, “issue” in quotes because for me it’s a crystal clear problem that should automatically be addressed when developing a brand and not thought of after the fact.

So one shopping habit people can consider is shopping local. Visit local markets and boutiques around your area and support and buy from these brands. Supporting local helps your community grow and reduces carbon footprint. Look for product using organic or recycled material and check for the “Made in.” Made in the U.S.A is wonderful and supports U.S. manufacturing. Hindsight, there are also brands that help empower women in developing countries by having them create products and provide them with a healthy, safe work environment and pay wage. These brands will usually make this known so it’s very important to support them as well. Cruelty free is another term to look for. This means no animals were harmed in the making of a product and can be found on tags or packaging. As for cosmetics or household items, it will be stated on the bottle or packaging “not tested on animals. “ Another factor to look for, does the brand give back and to what causes? There are also many brands on social media that serve as a platform for social, ethical brands. Their primary focus is to showcase these brands and make it easier for people to find ethical brands in one place.

After reading this maybe you will think to yourself, it’s time to make a change. Now if you are new to this world make small changes. Read labels or use products not tested on animals, so look for that sign or tag (usually has a small bunny, cruelty free or not tested on animals). The smallest changes matter, you matter and animals matter. Once you are aware, (which after reading this I hope you are and look up ethical fashion brands and products) you can make positive changes, remember that.

Live Balanced. Live Great.
